Cameron's Story (Mullaley)
Cameron from Mullaley, west of Gunnedah in North West NSW was suddenly
struck down with Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a rare but potentially
life threatening illness where a germ in his blood stream caused his kidneys
to shut down. He was flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital and placed
on dialysis in a medically induced coma to prevent permanent brain damage
as the stress on his kidneys were causing his brain to swell.
After 16 ‘touch and go’ days in Intensive Care on life support,
Cameron came out of the coma and recovered on the ward, looked after by
a team of health professionals involved with his care including nephrologists,
physiotherapist, dentists, occupational therapists and the brain injury
team.
“Seeing my son slowly come back to life after being so sick gave
me hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We can’t
thank the Hospital enough for all they have done to save my precious son,”
said Michelle, Cameron’s mum.
